Basic Marketing Strategy: Simply Promoting Your Small Business All The Ways You Can Afford

By Adrian Pepper I have many clients who are building their business from zero and so they have taught me what works as you develop your marketing strategy to find your first clients. I suggest you follow this effective and low-cost approach, with adjustments that depend on your personal touch and enthusiasm: 1) Word-of-mouth for referrals and recommendations Word of mouth is powerful as a form of promotion that is immediately available to you. Write a list of 20 people you know but you do not see regularly – such as relatives, friends, ex-colleagues or neighbours. Send each of them a friendly e-mail or postcard to tell them about your business, the products and services you offer and the benefits you can deliver. Ask them for feedback, advice or the contact details of anyone who they think might be interested in the service you offer. As you start to work with clients, ask them whom they can refer you to as well. And you do not necessarily need to wait until clients are impressed with your product delivery, I have gained referrals from people who have only just asked for a quote or pencilled in their future order. Sometimes the client will actually phone their recommendee, introduce me and hand me the phone; other times, 2) Networking with your connections Initially you may feel intimidated as you attend your initial networking events. Feeling you are on your own and have little experience is a definite barriers to success. You can cut through the barrier by talking to others around you and getting to know them and their interests. Ask open questions about their business, show an interest in their projects and ideas, and gather information about whom they linked with. If you can offer contacts and advice, people will remember you for it. Gradually, you will find that being interested in others is no longer scary and becomes enjoyable. You must avoid being pushy, dont sell yourself directly but be attractive and listen. Effective networking yields business in proportion to the relationships you build up with those in your network. You also need to meet regularly with useful people, such as potential clients or people who can point potential clients to you, be visible to them and follow a soft sales approach, giving information and making connections. 3) Business cards keep giving your message Business cards are useful and can help you stand out from the crowd. Long after meeting a prospect, your card can be working for you, reminding them who you are, what you can offer, and urging them to contact you. Simplicity is the key to the information your card should carry what does a prospect need to know? Probably your name, contact details and what you offer. Giving sufficient information is a key skill (and saying less has more effect). Some people use unusual materials where this adds value – textured card for graphic artists, plastic for car valeting and waterproof for tree surgeons. Offering a business tip, memorable quote or special offer on the back might act as a memory hook. Including your photo on the card might personalise it for busy people who easily forget names but not faces. 4) Discussion online The web offers such a variety of distinct opportunities for promoting your business that it is hard to know where to be seen for a small investment. You can raise your profile on the web by joining specialised forums and discussion groups for your client sector, and by exchanging links with websites that complement yours. Commenting on web logs (blogs) is a good way to raise your profile especially if you have something useful to contribute to the blog. Joining online networks that specialise in small business will allow you to post a full web profile about your business and to access to their lively trading boards. Often you can start as a visitor (for free with reduced functionality) as you assess whether the members are in your client group. There are also ezine directories where you can post articles of 500 to 2000 words about your topics of expertise. When the editors of paper or electronic magazines download and use your articles, they are required to include your attribution details, giving valuable advertising to your company and contact details. 5) Testimonials Putting client testimonials on your marketing literature or your website is a simple way to prove your credibility to prospects, helping them to decide to buy from you. An easy way to get testimonials is to ask your existing customers for feedback – do this over the phone, mailing them a short survey or posting a questionnaire on your website. When you to use a clients comment as a testimonial, make sure you ask permission. Explain clearly how you intend to use the testimonial, on your website, newsletter, brochure, mailshot or flyer. Make sure you name the customer when you quote the testimonial – this carries more weight, but will mean ensuring you get permission to use the name and above all, spell it correctly! If your client is happy to be your champion, they will naturally sell your services every time someone contacts them. How to Survive a Hospital Visit

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jay_Lee] Jay Lee The latest issue (Oct. 06) of Smart Money magazine has an article called “10 Things Your Hospital Won’t Tell You” that reminded me of the times the wife was in the hospital. There were some touch and go moments. A few times I was unsure whether she or I would make it out alive. Here are some strategies that helped me (and that might help you, the healthy one) when a loved one — wife, child or cat — enters the hospital. You might think the goal is to leave the hospital healthy (Oh, how I envy your naivete). The real goal is for your loved one to leave better than they entered without costing you an arm and a leg. I mean that literally and figuratively. Here are the things you are battling, that you need to keep an eye on: * Hospital errors. * Your (healthy one’s) mental well-being. 1. Hospital errors. According to the article, it’s not uncommon for hospitals to make treatment mistakes (treating wrong body parts, giving medication not proscribed for you, etc.). Then there are the errors of the financial kind: billing errors. They might double charge you, charge you for things not prescribed, etc. etc. 2. Your mental health. Trust me. Your imagination will run wild, run amazingly depressingly and pessimistic scenarios. All in the name of preparing you for the worst. STOP. You are the strong one. You are the healthy one. You do not have the luxury to give in to your weak impulses. Here is a simple method to deal with both of the above. Pretend you’re a reporter. Keep a journal. Ask lots of questions and write everything down. This is what I did when my wife had complications with our first child. And also when I had to take her in to the ER. I didn’t have a notebook. But I grabbed some scrap paper and jotted everything down. * Date, time, doctors and nurses’ names, medication, diagnoses. * I saved all the receipts. Ironically, this helped take my mind off my wife’s condition and helped to calm me down. Also, I was able to refer to my written report rather than my memory when billing disputes came up later and for follow-up treatment. One other thing: take care of yourself. This is much harder to do. You become so worried and so wrapped up taking care of your loved one that you neglect to wash, to rest, to eat. But you must remain strong. (P.S. It’s okay to breakdown. Go ahead and cry. Just do it away from the patient I sincerely hope you don’t need these tips, but if you find you and your loved one in a hospital, remember two things. 1. Keep a journal. 2. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. J. What is the Most Effective Depression Diet to Improve Mood?

By Mike Stevens Recently, as people suffering from depression turn away from prescription medications and start looking for alternative treatments, the depression diet has become increasingly popular. There are various nutrients and foods which can have a significant effect on one’s sense of self, and science has pointed to a strong relationship between diet and depression. While no one has a perfect diet, and most of us actually have pretty poor ones, diet and depression go hand in hand. Studies show that deficiencies in specific vitamins and minerals can actually increase your chances of succumbing to depression, especially if you have a family history of the disease. A basic depression diet consists of cutting out such short-term mood and energy boosters such as sugar and caffeine. That means coffee, black tea, and chocolate (commonly used by depression sufferers) are out. Alcohol is also prohibited as it can cause the very same vitamin deficiencies that contribute to depression. As you can see, diet and depression are quite important to each other. To replace poor eating habits, the depression diet focuses on maintaining a good balance of vitamins and minerals, particularly the B vitamins. Lack of folic acid is known to perpetuate depression in many people, while a low level of magnesium has been linked to suicidal tendencies. Choosing foods that are fresh and free of chemicals or preservatives is also an important part of a good diet. Unfortunately, although we know that we need a balanced diet, diet and depression continue to be a major source of concern today. Most of our food is so processed and preserved that it has lost much of its original vitamin content. Even eating fresh food, it is difficult to maintain the perfect diet. Eating as healthily as possible might not be good enough, so anyone on a depression diet should also take a supplement to ensure his or her body is receiving everything it needs. So, why does the depression diet work? Its all a matter of chemicals. Our bodies are fueled by what we eat, and that includes the chemicals that keep our moods balanced. Minerals and vitamins, along with amino acids, fatty acids and enzymes are all necessary for the body to produce chemicals called neurotransmitters. The most commonly known of these chemicals are seratonin, dopamine and endorphins, all of which help keep us emotionally regulated. When our diet is deficient as most modern diets are, the body is simply unable to create the necessary chemicals to maintain an equilibrium in the brain. Lack of one of these neurotransmitters can have drastic effects on our mental health, resulting in depression. Doctors tend to prescribe more chemicals to treat this condition, which can also be treated naturally. Diet and depression are cure and disease, and using diet to treat the disease is far more cost effective than many prescription drugs. While a depression diet which corrects vitamin deficiencies may not cure all types of depression, it certainly helps sufferers feel better. In cases where the depression is the sole result of lack of minerals or vitamins, a balanced diet can actually relieve and prevent further depression. Mike Stevens has been studying the mood disorders for years, and has written many articles on the subject. He is a regular contributor to Beat Your Depression Symptoms , a site discussing conventional and alternative ways to treat depression and related mood disorders. Plastic Surgery – Where Will It Occur

By Ricardo Silva As you evaluate the best plastic surgeon option for your treatment, you might be surprised to learn the location of your surgery should be part of your determination. Plastic Surgery Where Will It Occur The question of the location of your surgery probably never even occurred to you when you started thinking about having plastic surgery. If you are having plastic surgery, it must be done in a hospital, right? Actually, there are a wide variety of options and you need to understand them before making plastic surgeon evaluations. Much of the decision making process will depend on your comfort level with surgical procedures. There are three options when it comes to the location of your surgery. The first is the traditional hospital setting. The second is a surgical center. The third is actually in the office of the surgeon. By far, the largest percentage of plastic surgery procedures occur in the offices of the surgeon. Having your surgery done in a hospital is an excellent choice. First, it means your surgeon has hospital privileges, which means the hospital has evaluated the surgeon and found them to have a level of competency the hospital is comfortable with. Second, the hospital surgical process is highly regulated by government, which means you are going to get optimal care before, during and after the procedure. A surgical center is a facility set up to handle a variety of surgical procedures. Hospitals only have so much space and there is rarely enough time available to handle all the surgeries scheduled in your city or town. The surgical center fills this gap. Much like a hospital, it is heavily regulated and the care is very good. To collect fees, the center must be certified by various government agencies, and the government agencies are sticklers for details like safety. Having your surgery in a surgical center is not indicative of any negative factor. Many surgeons have surgical facilities built into their offices. Since they are expensive, you will usually find these facilities when there is a group of doctors providing surgical procedures. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this approach, you need to pay close attention to certifications. Has the facility been certified by an independent group for safety and emergency procedures? The question is not so much whether it is safe for the surgical procedure you are undergoing, but whether the facility is equipped to handle any unexpected problems. Surgery is an invasion of the body and carries inherent risks. It is important that certifications for things such as life support be held by the office and by the nurses. Having surgery in an office facility is very common and has its benefits. The office option is almost always cheaper than hospitalization or a surgical center. Still, we are talking about your body, so make sure to view the facility, ask for certifications and meet with the nurses. If you are not comfortable with any aspect of the facility, you are better off going with a surgeon who has hospital privileges or using a surgical center. There are a lot of factors to consider. Make sure you dont leave out the issue of the location of the actual procedure. Ricardo de Silva is with PlasticSurgeonPractices.com a directory of plastic surgeons. Zicam Side Effects: Shortens Colds But Permanently Destroys Sense of Smell

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Margaret_Wommack] Margaret Wommack Zicam is a homeopathic intranasal zinc remedy that is intended to reduce the length of a cold. It is either taken in a spray or a swab. However, many users of Zicam are complaining of anosmia which is a loss of smell and consequently diminishment or loss of taste. Although scientists have long know about the potential harm of zinc and that applying zinc to the nasal cavity damages or destroys nasal nerves, Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of Zicam, has not properly warned users about this life-altering side effect. Anosmia symptoms (loss of smell and taste) have lasted for years after the cold subsided, negating the argument that since diminished sense of smell is a symptom of the common cold, that the cold and not Zicam was to blame. Scientists have known since the 1930s when intranasal zinc was applied as a possible method of preventing polio that it causes significant nasal nerve damage that can lead to a loss of smell. A lawyer who specializes in pursuing defective product cases, medical malpractice cases, or personal injury cases can help you if you wish to take a lawsuit against Matrixx Initiatives. How to Avoid Online Dating Risks

By Lawrence Andrews Online dating has become a popular service nowadays. In fact, so many people all over the world, mostly singles, are members of various online dating services to find their perfect match. While online dating services have benefits, there are some serious drawbacks to it too. The most important concern is your safety risk. How would you know that the otherwise sweet and loving chat mate of yours you need in an online service turns out to be a rapist or stalker? Like traditional dating, online dating has some risks. To avoid danger, consider the following tips. 1. In your profile, it is good not to include detailed personal information, such as your personal home address, job address, telephone number, or email address. Dating sites, especially the reputable ones, make sure that all their members are safe. Some do it by checking the criminal records of their members, some automatically deleting any detailed information in your personal profile. 2. It would be good if you know more about the person you just met online before giving him or her any personal information about you. Take some time in knowing him or her first before setting up a date with the person. 3. Don’t put false information in your profile or a fake photograph. If you want people to be honest with you too, be genuine in your information. Honesty is the best policy. A clich, yes; but it works in online dating. 4. It might be good to have an email account set up in fee email sites like Yahoo or Hotmail. Give this email address to online users who want to have your email, instead of your main email address. In case you don’t want a person to contact you again, then at least your main email address is safe and free from his or her emails. 5. Be wary of people who are lying to you. Be careful of people who: – Want to meet up with you instantly and pressures you. – Bug you to give your personal contact details when they themselves don’t want to give you their personal contact information. – Are not consistent in giving you information about their martial status, age, employment, among others. – Avoid answering questions that are reasonable directly. 6. If somebody is bothering you already, stop sending him or her messages immediately. Online dating is fun, but you have to be aware that it also has safety risks as well. 5 Easy Diet Changes That Can Help You Lose Weight

By Paul Kayne Many people feel that to lose weight you have to go on a big diet and change everything that you eat. But there are many simple things that you can do to help lose weight. Here are 5 pain free things that you can do to help shed some pounds.Eat from a smaller plate Research has shown that people have an internal concept of what a serving is. A smaller plate can help reduce that serving size. You can eat all of the regular foods, just eat from a smaller plate as it helps limit your portions. But watch out! There is a gotcha here. If you chose a plate that is too small, it may appear to your subconscious as half of a normal serving, making you crave a second plate! Switch to whole grains This doesn’t involve changing the food you eat, just mixing it up a bit. Whole grain baked goods are more filling and will increase your dietary intake of fiber. Take this change slowly, don’t go out and buy all new rice, pasta, and bread all at once. Because you may find that you’ll need to make some compromises for flavor, or because the family doesn’t like some of the changes. Just replace things as you need them.Rediscover Soup Soup is an excellent low calorie meal. Having soup a few more times a week can make a large difference to your caloric balance and is relatively pain free. But there are a couple of things to watch out for. There are some wickedly high calorie soups out there, watch those nutrition labels! A good cream of your favorite vegetable can have as many calories as a burger. Soup is good on occasion, but not all the time. Don’t get carried away with it.Switch to diet / light / skim These are simple changes that may be difficult to make initially, but give it a week, and you won’t even notice. Drinks are a significant source of calories that don’t contribute to our feelings of fullness. I’ll eat the same amount of food if I have eggnog or skim milk, but the eggnog adds a significant number of calories. Instead of a cup of chocolate milk, you can eat 1 cup of spaghetti and still consume fewer calories.Eat Breakfast Don’t follow the sumo wrestler habit of skipping breakfast to gain weight. A healthy nutritious breakfast will prevent your metabolism from slowing down (ever feel cold when you skip breakfast in the morning?). Wake up a little earlier or prepare the night before to make sure you get in a good breakfast. Long term weight loss requires long term changes. Simple changes like these can be easy to implement and painless to maintain. Good luck on your weight loss journey! Paul Kayne is a writer on issues related to weight loss, health and fitness. Peonies ‘Krinkled White’ and ‘Vivid Rose’

By Alan Summers Add Old-Fashioned Beauty to your Garden Peonies have an old-fashioned beauty and longevity that have made them a perennial favorite of gardeners. Before being introduced in North America, they were grown thousands of years ago in gardens across the world. There is evidence that Peonies were used for medicinal purposes in Europe over 2000 years ago and that during the reign of Emperor Yang (605-617) in China they were grown as ornamental plants. Peonies were introduced in North America during the 1830′s and their popularity has only increased since then. This week we are featuring two of our favorite Peonies – ‘Krinkled White’ and ‘Vivid Rose.’ ‘Krinkled White’ ‘Krinkled White’ is a simple and classic Peony – large single, snow white petals around a pillow of rich golden stamens and green pistils. ‘Krinkled White’ is a nice contrast to the more common double flowering varieties. The ruffled-edge, crepe paper-like petals form a bowl shape that can reach 5 to 7 inches across. The stems are straight and strong and do not flop in the garden. ‘Krinkled White’ is ideal for a cut floral display. Easy-to-grow and a prolific bloomer. ‘Vivid Rose’ ‘Vivid Rose’ has large, fully double, brilliant pink blooms that actually glow in the garden! Introduced in 1952 by the renowned Klehm family, it remains a favorite of gardeners not only for its beautiful blooms, but for its delightful sweet scent. The blooms can reach up to 6 to 8 inches across. As with ‘Krinkled White’, ‘Vivid Rose’ also has stiff stems with disease-resistant, crinkled foliage that remains deep green right into autumn. Planting and Care Both ‘Krinkled White’ and ‘Vivid Rose’ are extremely hardy and once established, are one of the longest lived perennials available – lasting for over 50 years! Expect them to reach about 30 inches high, with the stunning display of blooms in the spring. The foliage forms a nice round clump – making the Peonies look more like shrubs than perennials. When cut in the almost-open bud stage, they open in water and last about a week indoors. Do not cut any flowers the first or second year. Be sure to cut faded flowers to prevent seed formation. Early to mid fall is the best time to plant Peonies as it allows time for their roots to become established. Your peony will spend its first year getting established and will not be floriferous. Prefers an area with full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Good drainage is essential. Alkaline soil is a preference but is not essential. Mix lots of compost, such as Chesapeake Blue, into the soil at planting. Fertilize with Bulb-Tone in early spring. When planting, do not put fertilizer directly on the plant roots but into the soil away from the roots. Peonies should be lightly fertilized again after blooming. Plant with the “eyes” exactly 1 1/2 inches below the soil level. Water well right after planting. Mulch with 2 inches of shredded hardwood mulch after the ground has frozen. Remove the mulch in the early spring. Hardy in zones 3-8. Click here to view ‘Krinkled White’ on the Carroll Gardens website. Click here to view ‘Vivid Rose’ on the Carroll Gardens website. Alan Summers, president of Carroll Gardens, Inc., has over 30 years experience in gardening and landscape design. He has made Carroll Gardens one of Americas preeminent nurseries, having introduced more than 20 new perennials and woody shrubs over the years and reintroduced numerous lost cultivars back to American gardeners. Carroll Gardens publishes a weekly online newsletter written by Alan. It contains valuable gardening advice and tips and answers to customer questions. Every Saturday, Alan hosts a call-in gardening forum on WCBM radio – 680 AM. For those outside of the WCBM listening area, they can listen to radio show via the internet.
